Young Energy Leader Award

Recharge Earth Young Energy Leader Award

Young people are the driving force behind the energy transition. That’s why the Young Energy Leader Award was created: to reward young talents for their commitment to a sustainable future and to encourage them to share their vision and innovative ideas.

Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Erasmus University, Tilburg University, Delft University of Technology, Avans University of Applied Sciences, Radboud University, and The Hague University of Applied Sciences each make a careful selection of talented students who will pitch their theses during Recharge Earth. This initiative is supported by Eneco. Together with Eneco, we offer a platform for young leaders to present their ideas and make a lasting impact on the energy challenges of our time.

This year, the Young Energy Leader Award pitch day took place for the first time at Eneco. Watch the 2024 Eneco pitch day aftermovie here.

Proud winners of the Young Energy Leader Award 2024!

On the first day of Recharge Earth, the finalists presented their pitches. After careful deliberation, the jury selected two winners: Christian Porro and Florian B. J. Popkes. They have been named the winners of the Young Energy Leader Award 2024. Thanks to Eneco for their support and for offering a platform to these young leaders.

Christian Porro, from Avans University of Applied Sciences, presented an innovative solution to reduce emissions from cargo ships. He proposed the electrification of terminals combined with a smart energy management system, taking important steps toward cleaner shipping. The jury was impressed by his thorough approach and the fact that he considered not only emissions, but also cost and operational aspects in his solution. Jury chair Eric Wiebes invited Christian to apply his solution — currently being tested in the Port of Rotterdam — in ports around the world.

Florian B. J. Popkes, from Delft University of Technology, presented groundbreaking research into seawater electrolysis. Despite challenges around expensive and scarce materials, Florian showed that there is much to be learned even from less successful experiments. His strong presentation and solid research foundation give him a promising start for further PhD research. This award highlights how young talents like Christian and Florian contribute to a sustainable future and inspire us with their vision and perseverance.
